A steam locomotive attempting to break a speed record made its way through Plymouth this morning. The Clun Castle is trying to make the fastest steam journey between Plymouth and Bristol.

The 74-year-old locomotive departed from Plymouth at around 9:30am this morning and was scheduled to arrive into Bristol at 12:30pm. Footage was captured of it passing through Plympton shortly after 10am by onlookers at the IMO Car Wash.

There have been around 300 passengers onboard, each paying up to £450. They will be served the same lunch menu that was served when the train first ran on May 9, 1904.

The train is owned by Birmingham-based Vintage Trains and, during the summer, it hauls excursion trains from Birmingham to Stratford. But in the early 1950s, it was based Newton Abbot railway shed.

In 1956 it was transferred to Plymouth before returning to Newton Abbot the following year, where it stayed until 1962. It later moved to London and then Gloucester.

Today's goal is to break the record for the fastest steam train journey between Plymouth and Bristol which has been held for 60 years.
