Watch: Moment driver is rescued from lorry dangling off bridge

A driver has been saved in an extraordinary rescue operation after her lorry was left dangling over the edge of a bridge in Kentucky.

The woman’s vehicle had crashed through a barrier but it is unclear how the accident happened. Police confirmed there was a “motor vehicle collision” on the bridge.

Firefighters pulled the driver from the lorry using ropes and ladders within 45 minutes of the incident. The woman was unharmed, officials said.

“She held it together like a champ,” Brian O’Neill, the Louisville fire department chief, said in a news conference, describing the woman as very calm throughout her ordeal.

“But I will say, the second she hit solid ground she was able to let those emotions go and just have that relief. It’s a pretty impressive thing.”

He added that it was “extremely lucky” that the vehicle never plunged into the water, roughly 75ft below.

One of the firefighters, Bryce Carden, told reporters “we’ve certainly done some crazy things but this tops it so far”.

Authorities are now turning their attention to removing the truck from its precarious position, which is hanging over the Ohio River.
