Watch moment Yorkshire drink driver struggles to speak and blows five times limit after serious crash

Police have made an example of a drunk Yorkshire man who caused a car crash - seriousy injuring three people - by posting the video of his humiliating arrest.

The embarrassing footage of John Duckworth, 46, shows him inebriated behind the wheel following the awful three-car crash on Bawtry Road in Rotherham, Saturday, September 6. He was unable to articulate a sentence when officers attended, at 1.40pm.

When the South Yorkshire Police officer asks him to blow into a breathalyser, the drunkard appears to suck from the device. The aghast officer then remarks: "You need to start blowing. You're not drinking it! You're blowing through it. Take a deep breath. Listen to me very carefully, take a deep breath, fill your lungs and blow through it."

After giving a hearty breath, it was revealed the 46-year-old was driving at five times over the alcohol limit.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Duckworth, of Harmony Way, Rotherham, had failed to stop at the junction of Bawtry Road and Pavillion Lane and how his actions led to a three-car collision, with three people, including an elderly woman, suffering serious injuries.

The victims have since physically recovered but the mental trauma all occupants suffered will stay with them for life. Duckworth, who was uninjured following the collision, was spoken to by officers at the scene and witnessed to be slurring his words, unable to speak clearly and slumped over the steering wheel. He was breathalysed and blew a sample of 180, with the legal limit for alcohol being 35.

Duckworth pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and disqualified from driving for 10 years, on Wednesday, April 10.

Roads Policing Officer PC James Ball said: “This incident highlights the dangers of people getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs. People were seriously injured because of Duckworth’s selfish actions, which could have had fatal consequences.

“We are currently in week two of the Fatal 4 campaign, raising awareness of the dangers of the biggest contributing factors to fatalities and those seriously injured on our roads; speeding, driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, mobile phone use and failing to wear a seatbelt.

“Hopefully Duckworth’s consequences for his actions can act as a deterrent to other drivers. It isn’t worth the risk. You could kill someone, lose your job, family and friends.
