Watch Pat Sajak zing a “Wheel of Fortune” contestant during his final week as host

The host of 40-plus years will appear on his last episode — at least in front of the camera — Friday.

Pat Sajak is not mailing it in on his last week hosting Wheel of Fortune.

He served up a zinger on Wednesday night's episode, after contestant Allison made an incorrect guess to solve a puzzle in the bonus round, in which she had the board all to herself. After she was unable to come up with the answer before the buzzer, he quipped, "Ooooh, you were so not close."

Allison laughed and said she'd "rather that be the case" than being very close.

Sajak, who has hosted for over 40 years, has shared his feelings about leaving the job in a series of videos released this week with his daughter, Maggie Sajak, the game show's social media correspondent. In the third installment of Thanks for the Memories, Sajak explained that he considers his "most important role on the show" to be making contestants feel comfortable.

"First of all, they're great. They come from all over the country, all over the world, and, you know, they come to have a good time," Papa Sajak said. "They come because it's Wheel of Fortune. They're excited to be there. Sometimes winning money is the least of it. They just want the experience."

Sajak explained that he really cares about contestants and understands that they're vulnerable in front of the cameras.

"When someone screws up, my first reaction is, 'How do I make it better for them?' But everybody's different," he said. "Some you joke with. Some you playfully yell at. Some you have to hug and get them through it. It's a big part of what I do, I'm proud of what I do, and I hope they know how much I cared about them and how much I tried to make that experience one they'll never forget."

Though Sajak will take his bow as host this week, he will remain a consultant for three years. Viewers will see Ryan Seacrest on theirs TVs, along with Vanna White and Maggie Sajak.
