This was the moment two cars and a cyclist were nearly struck by a fallen tree in Darwen earlier this week.

A woman from Darwen captured the moment a cyclist and two cars were nearly struck by the tree in Whitehall Road.

Vicky Furnell-Roberts owns a small waste disposals and removals business and filmed the video when she was working from home, and works with woodland areas on a weekly basis.

She said: "I was working from home that day when I just heard a very loud crash.

"I knew a tree had fallen, as it happens more than you might think when you live and work near a wooded area.

"I went to check the footage on our CCTV and was shocked to see how close so many people had come to being hit by the tree!

"I shared [it] on Facebook, as I thought no one will believe that cyclist when they tell the story!

"If you are this cyclist or either of those two cars, go put the lotto on, you have lady luck on your side. Glad you were all safe."

In the video, you can see two cars pass under the tree, and a cyclist approaching with a high-vis jacket and helmet on.

Before the cyclist reaches the tree, they notice the large breaking sound and luckily stop before it crashes down onto the road.

Whitehall Road had to be closed whilst the tree was removed and assessed by council officers.

Tony Watson, head of environment at Blackburn with Darwen Council, said: "In this case, the tree collapsed due to water ingress in the joint of the limb of the tree.

"Although we do undertake ground visual inspections of trees in the borough, this would have been impossible to spot from ground level.

"To ensure that the remaining tree does not provide any further risk, we will be undertaking an aerial inspection of the tree and surrounding area."
