'Water for Elephants' Musical Adaptation Coming to Broadway Spring 2024
"Water for Elephants," based on Sara Gruen's 2006 novel, will open at New York City's Imperial Theatre on March 21
Water for Elephants is marching to Broadway.
On Tuesday, the producers of the new Waters for Elephants musical — an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name by author Sara Gruen — announced that the production will open at New York City's Imperial Theatre in early spring.
The show will be directed by the Tony-nominated director Jessica Stone (Kimberly Akimbo), with a book by Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatchers, Jersey Boys) and music and lyrics by the musical group PigPen Theatre Co.
Water for Elephants will begin preview performances Saturday, Feb. 24, and open Thursday, March 21, with casting announcements coming soon.
"After losing what matters most, a young man jumps on a moving train unsure of where the road will take him and finds a new home with the remarkable crew of a traveling circus, and a life — and love — beyond his wildest dreams," reads a synopsis.
"Seen through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose the ride, life can begin again at any age."

Director Stone said in a statement that she is excited to work with "our enormous design and creative team, an incredible group of artists from different avenues of storytelling."
"From Broadway veterans to puppeteers to circus artists — we have an eclectic collection of internationally acclaimed and innovative creators,” Stone said.
“What’s amazing about the culture of the circus is that you’re dependent upon one another to do a trick safely, so as a team we really all must lean on one another. If we do our jobs well and connect with our audience we will, quite literally, get the story off the page and into the air.”
