Waterloo Road star Adam Thomas has opened up on coping with the loss of his father, revealing he feels his spirit is within his dog.

The actor, also known for the role of Adam Barton in Emmerdale, lost his dad in 2020. In a recent interview, Thomas revealed he feels his father's presence in his dog Bella as the two were "very close".

"My dad was very close to Bella, and I feel he is within her and looking after me," he told the Daily Star.

"He's definitely around and I'm very thankful. It used to irritate me because she's my dog but every time my dad came round, she would always favour him. Animals were drawn to him," he continued.

Thomas also explained he feels there's a kinship between Bella and his dad.

"The way Bella looks at me sometimes are the same looks my dad used to give me like: 'You shouldn't be doing that' sort of thing. She's always looking at me like I'm doing something wrong and follows me everywhere. Bella is always there, and my dad was there for me. It's nice to hold on to things like that."

The actor has reprised the role of Donte Charles in the Waterloo Road revival airing this year. His new storylines partly revolve around the death of his wife Chlo (Katie Griffiths), a tragic moment that has helped Thomas come to terms with his own grief.

"Everything happens for a reason. The storyline came at the right time for me – maybe that was a message from my dad. I didn't realise how much I was grieving until I did the research into the character," he explained.

"I'm very thankful the storyline came around when it did because not only has it helped me, but other people."

Waterloo Road is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
