Wayne Rooney in Plymouth to start his new Argyle job

Like anyone starting a new job in a new town or city it will take Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney time to get used to his new surroundings.

Manchester United's record goalscorer will be in charge of the Pilgrims' squad for the first time when they begin pre-season training on Wednesday, ahead of them leaving for a training camp in Marbella on the Spanish Costa del Sol at the weekend.

Rooney is already in Plymouth after leaving his role as a pundit at Euro 2024 in Germany for the BBC last week to focus on preparing Argyle for the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Given his high profile as one of England's greatest ever players he is sure to be spotted whenever he is out and about in the city but the Pilgrims' boss has said he is happy to stop and have a chat with fans when they see him.

There was an example of that on Monday evening when Rooney paid a visit to the Seco Lounge cafe bar in the Mills Bakery at the Royal William Yard.

Rooney posed for a photo with Chun, who hosts the regular Monday night quizzes at the Seco Lounge, which was posted on their Facebook page. They wrote: "It’s only Wayne Roooneeey crashing our Monday night quiz!! There’s no escaping the footy madness even for our quizmaster Chun!"

Argyle will not have any pre-season games at Home Park this year due to the installation of a new state-of-the-art pitch and other improvements around the stadium.

So the 38-year-old will have to wait until the Carabao Cup first round tie against Cheltenham Town, which will be played on the week commencing August 12, for his first match at the Theatre of Greens as the Argyle head coach.

Before then, though, they will have away pre-season matches against Cheltenham Town on July 20, Torquay United on July 27, Bristol Rovers on July 30 and MK Dons on August 3, as well as playing South African side Orlando Pirates during their trip to Spain.

Rooney has brought in Pete Shuttleworth as his assistant head coach after the pair were previously together at Derby County, DC United in the USA and Birmingham City.
