Line of Duty star set to join Netflix's Wednesday for season 2

Netflix smash hit Wednesday has another new cast addition, with Line of Duty star Thandiwe Newton set to join for the returning season.

The actor has been lined up for a featured role in Wednesday season 2, but Variety reports that the exact nature of her character is being held back. Netflix is not commenting at this stage.

Newton is a star of both stage and screen, and won a Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal of the killer android Maeve in Westworld.

Other notable TV roles have included a BAFTA TV Award-nominated performance as Roz Huntley in Line of Duty and voicing Mona the Hormone Monstress in Netflix's animated shows Big Mouth and Human Resources.

She won a BAFTA Film Award for the movie Crash, as well as appearing in Mission: Impossible 2, Solo: A Star Wars Story and lending her voice to Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget on the big screen.

Thandiwe is the second major cast addition for Wednesday this month after Golden Globe winner Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire/Miracle Workers) joined in another undisclosed role.

Wednesday is set for major changes behind the scenes for the second season, as its production base moves from Romania to Ireland.

Series star Jenna Ortega has also promised that the teen romance aspect of Wednesday will be cut down in the second run.

"We're ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great," she told Variety. "We've decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.

"Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don't want to take yourself too seriously."

Wednesday streams on Netflix. Season 2 has been confirmed.
