A weird Lord of the Rings fan theory has finally been debunked

If you're more of a casual Lord of the Rings fans, you might have been bemused over the past few years if you've ever come across a particular fan theory involving Frodo and Legolas.

Five years ago, Reddit user applecub noted that in the big reunion scene as part of The Return of the King's many, many endings, Frodo never actually mentioned Legolas by name, despite saying the name of the other Fellowship members.

In a light-hearted theory, it was argued that it was because Frodo doesn't actually know Legolas's name.

"This is because Frodo's mind was distracted with the gravity of his mission when he met Legolas so he completely spaced during their introduction," they argued. "Frodo didn't want to ask during the Fellowship reuniting as it would seem impolite."

To be fair, Frodo did have a lot on his plate and we've all forgotten somebody's name every now and then. Legolas might have given Frodo his bow (metaphorically), but Frodo went through some serious trauma from that moment through to his reunion with the lusciously-haired elf.

Lord of the Rings fans liked the theory so much that they ran with it and 'confirmed' the theory with further evidence that the duo share so few scenes together across the trilogy, it must be true.

However, we're sorry to say that the theory has been well and truly debunked by an eagle-eyed Lord of the Rings fan.

If you'll recall, before Frodo leaves for the Undying Lands, we see him writing a book of all his adventures. When we see a couple of pages from the book, the name of Legolas can be seen under Frodo's left arm.

The discovery came from Reddit user Icy_Statement_2410 and it's clear proof that, however funny it would be for Frodo to not know Legolas's name, it's just not the case.

Of course, as they point out, this book was being written years after that reunion moment where it seemed like Frodo didn't know Legolas's name: "It's possible he didn't know Legolas' name at the time but learned it later (even just to write the book)."

Lord of the Rings fans aren't ready to let the fan theory die though, with some saying it was probably Sam who told Frodo and he truly didn't remember the name of that elf who helped him one time.

Clearly one of the new Lord of the Rings movies should be entirely focused on whether Frodo really did know or not.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is available to watch on Sky Cinema and NOW. You can also buy the extended versions from Prime Video.
