Well known North Wales retailer wants to hold car boot sales in parking area to help trade

A well known retailer and cafe wants to host car boot sales in part of its parking area to help boost trade. Fabric store Abakhan, on the Coast Road in Mostyn, has been in business at its current site for 50 years and attracts people from across the region.

They employ 90 people locally and traded successfully for decades but like many retailers have seen a drop in sales in recent months. This has seen the business look to host regular car boot sales and markets on their land.

The owners want to use part of the existing car park to hold events on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They believe it is a way of boosting revenues during a challenging period for retail.

An application has been submitted with Flintshire council.

Planning agent Civitas said: "The wider site is a long standing Flintshire business, and has been present on this site for 50 years. The site now employs approx. 90 local people and provides an attraction/retail that is widely used by many within the area and beyond.

"The business holds craft classes, as well as having the retail area and café on site. The site has a long history of retail use related to crafts, fabrics, haberdashery, etc. The business operator is now looking to expand this already successful local business through the offer of the car boot sale/market.

"The applicant already holds market days under the 14 day rule and these have proven successful in increasing footfall to the site. As with a lot of businesses, there has been a downturn in footfall and sales.

"Sales have shown a 3.3% decrease compared with last year (12 months ending January 2024 v 12 months ending January 2023). Meanwhile, the number of retail transactions - 3% decrease (when comparing a 2 year period of 12 months ending January 2024 v 12 months ending January 2022).

"The business is at a point where they are having to diversify their offer in order to attempt to turn this downturn into an upward trend in sales and footfall. The car boot sale/market day is a low cost and low impact way of doing this, hence this application is made.

"The application therefore proposes the use of the land identified on the associated plan for a car boot sale. Although the land is part of the current carpark, this part of the car park is very rarely used and this use on the set times proposed would be incredibly beneficial to the business and locality as a whole.3.2 The car boot would operate every Wednesday and Saturday between 7am and 1pm."

This will now be considered by planners.
