Mixing business with pleasure is often advised against - and one family has learned exactly why after a domestic dispute turned sour over property rights.

The drama unfolded when a young mum was allowed to live rent-free in a house owned by her brother-in-law. He typically rents out the place but made an exception for her to support her through college and single motherhood, reports the Mirror.

The woman's older sister, who is married to the homeowner, shared the story on Reddit: "She got pregnant unexpectedly in high school and me and my parents have been very supportive of her.

"My husband owns a townhome complex that he rents out and we decided to let her live in one of them rent free, since she's in college and we want her to focus on that."

But this generous offer came with a stipulation. The elder sibling explained: "The only rule I had for her was to not allow her baby daddy to move in. The guy is very much bad news."

But the married couple began to grow suspicious that the unwelcome lover was staying at the property against their wishes, leading to a confrontation.

After repeatedly spotting his car at the property and feeling "lied to" by her sister when it was brought up, the older sibling decided to take matters into her own hands.

She said: "My sister went out of town and this is where I may be wrong but I just needed to just see for myself, so I used the master key and went into the house and it's pretty clear he's living there."

In a rage, she confronted her sister which resulted in a "screaming match". The sister continued: "She was mad I went into her home without permission.

"I told her she needs to start paying rent or I'll be evicting her. My mum is on her side and said it was unnecessary that I went into her home when she wasn't there."

Conflicted about whether or not she was right to go into her sister's home, she turned to Reddit to see what others thought. Unfortunately for the woman, forum users were divided about her actions.

Replying to the post on the 'Am I the A*****e' forum, one person wrote: "NTA. She knew the rules, she broke them. She can pay her way, or live by the rules. It's a simple concept really." A second agreed: "Your house, your rules."

But another replied: "You had no reason to go into her home. You're trying to control her life and that's not ever going to work."
