West Brom set to bank small summer windfall as part of £118m benefit

Okay Yokuslu's call up by Turkiye is set to bank West Brom a handy fee this summer. Albion's midfield favourite enjoyed a strong season, playing regularly alongside Alex Mowatt under Carlos Corberan, as the Baggies reached the play-offs but came up just short in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League.

Yokuslu was first called up by Turkiye in 2015 and earned a number of caps until 2021, when he lost his place in the squad. After last season, though, the midfield general earned himself a recall and joined his compatriots in their camp in Germany. Yokuslu was an unused substitute in their opening game victory over Georgia on Tuesday and again on Saturday against Portugal.

Irrespective of whether he plays every minute for his nation hereon out or whether he makes an appearance full stop, however, Albion are set to earn. The scheme, called the Club Benefits Programme, is designed to aid clubs from around Europe who allow their players to represent their countries at various international tournaments which take place every couple of years - there's a similar programme in place for the World Cup.

The compensation pot stands at £118m, to be divided up per club, per day that their player is away with the national team. What that means for Albion and Yokuslu is that they'll earn thousands of pounds for every day that the group stage plays out. If Turkiye don't make it through to the last 16, then the minimum the Baggies will bank is in the region of £140,000.

That said, Turkiye - also in a group with Portugal and the Czech Republic, the former who they were well beaten by on Saturday evening - will still fancy their chances of finishing in the top two, or even as a best performing third placed team, after collecting three points in their opening encounter with Georgia earlier this week. Each day Yokuslu spends with his country, Albion will bank a little more.

Yokuslu, along with fellow international star Semi Ajayi, is expected to be permitted a longer break this summer, beyond when the remainder of the Albion squad are expected to report back for pre-season training; Ajayi has been away with Nigeria for their World Cup 2026 qualifiers and started both the draw with South Africa and the loss to Benin this month.
