JD Wetherspoon plans to create a new hotel on the high street of a Merseyside town.

The pub chain wishes to convert the vacant upper floors of its existing Sir Henry Segrave pub on Lord Street in Southport into 30 hotel rooms. Plans submitted to Sefton Council detail Wetherspoon's intention to make some alterations to the ground floor pub, including a hotel reception, an extended kitchen area and refurbishments.

Hotel rooms would be found on the first, second and third floors. Architects JH.A are working with the pub giant to deliver the project.

The planning statement says: "The proposed works include the internal alterations to The Sir Henry Segrave, to create hotel rooms on levels one, two and three, with alterations to the ground floor bar to suit.

"Currently, the pub is operational on the ground floor with the upper levels unused. The precedent pages demonstrate JD Wetherspoons capabilities of reviving significant buildings. By taking into account history and heritage, they are able to meaningfully revive and restore existing structures to become spaces that are open and inviting to the public."

Wetherspoon operates more than 50 hotels across the UK and Ireland - all of them are attached to one of its pubs.

Plans for a hotel at the Sir Henry Segrave follow the approval of another hotel project on Lord Street. In April, Sefton Council approved plans to convert the Grade II-listed Garrick Theatre building into a mixed-use facility, including a 109-room hotel. Developer Garrick Southport's plans for the building also include a swimming pool, retail units, a gym and spa, a restored theatre area, a bar and restaurant and 12 apartments.
