The DJ of Northampton Town F.C. has apologised after he played Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas’ at a recent game, potentially wiping out thousands of participants in the ‘Whamaggedon’ game.

In recent years, ‘Whamaggedon’ has seen players trying to avoid Wham!’s iconic festive hit until Christmas Eve, with players knocked out of the game when they hear it.

But DJ Matt Facer was met with backlash after he played the song at the Cobblers’ 3-0 home loss to Portsmouth, potentially wiping out thousands of players who were at the stadium.

“I never knew people took it so seriously,” he told BBC News. “I gave it a spin, thinking it would be quite funny to wipe out 7,000 people who couldn’t avoid it, but clearly it isn’t funny.”

Facer explained that he had faced insults on Twitter, as well as from within the stadium.

“So I officially apologise to everybody whose Christmas I’ve ruined,” he said.

He has also vowed to avoid playing the song at any future games, adding: “I can take on the chin with my home fans and Portsmouth, but I don’t think I’ll be playing it again.

“I think it’s a shame people in professions like mine can’t play Wham! until [late] December, but it’s a game and we all have to jump on board.”
