Broni says despite emojis first being introduced in 2008, they’re only getting more popular - dispelling suggestions that Gen Z are less keen on the pics than older Brits. He said the positive mix in the emojis we love the most is probably due to people spending a lot of time with friends and family, saying: "The top 10 indicates that people are continuing to express positivity among their friends and family.

"With its track record, I believe ‘crying with laughter’ will remain at number one next year. Other laughter emojis will continue to be the most popular across the world."

Broni said year-on-year growth in the use of emojis shows they are here to stay and a "powerful communication tool" used across the world.

He added: "I absolutely don’t think emojis will be dying out - emojis’ global popularity has continued to grow year-on year, and 2023 has been no different. They’re an incredibly powerful communication tool that people use to better express themselves."
