The inside of your handbag may be dirtier than a toilet seat, according to new research.

The shocking claim comes after a study found 10,000 different types of bacteria living inside the average handbag.

The research, commissioned, by the Herald Sun, found a ridiculous amount of germ-carrying rubbish in the bags they tested.

And some things that may shock you.

The paper spoke with My Bag Spa owner Alex How from Melbourne, who discovered scraps of food, cigarettes and even pet urine inside.

He said: “Dog and cat pee are the worst and we have to wear gloves and a mask to remove those smells or else our skin starts to itch,”

“Some bag users put rubbish in their bag and totally forget about it.

“Wine, all sorts of food scraps and sauces and cigarettes are things that build up over years. It can be quite ugly when the bags come in for service.”

The paper added that not all bags are this bad as it, of course, depends on the owner.

However, online cleaning agent Helpling partner manager Roxanna Pelka said handbags are dirtier than your average toilet – as toilets are cleaned far more regularly.
