WhatsApp has announced the most significant overhaul to its chat app in years, promising a fresh look and enhanced features for users' phones.

The world's leading chat app is set for a visual transformation, with an updated design and even a new take on the iconic green colour we're all accustomed to seeing upon opening WhatsApp. The company aims to 'refine the user experience and enrich communication methods' with this update.

The revamp, which is gradually being introduced worldwide, aims to declutter the interface. WhatsApp hopes the changes will make the app feel more contemporary and clean while maintaining its essential functionality.

They say the familiar large green banner at the top of the current app is being replaced by a 'cleaner, more minimalist design' dominated by white.

"WhatsApp should feel fresh, fun and yours with a look that's familiar and native to your device," said WhatsApp. "The new design should enhance simplicity, be scalable and future proof.", reports the Mirror.

Another noticeable change for users will be the updated green hue, now a brighter and more fluorescent variant. WhatsApp reveals that it went through over 35 different colour iterations before settling on this particular new shade.

WhatsApp is spicing things up with a new shade of green and an even darker dark mode for those night owls. "We heard that people wanted a darker dark mode. We focused on higher contrast and deeper tones to reduce eye strain in low-light environments," the messaging giant explained.

"We're making it one shade darker for improved visual appeal and legibility."

The chat app is also getting a facelift with updated icons and illustrations. WhatsApp has announced a switch to a rounded, outlined style for its icons, and in keeping with this new look, it's also revamping its illustrations with added animation to create a "more playful aesthetic".

Not forgetting the original default chat background, which is getting a makeover too. "We learned most people used the doodle, but there was an opportunity to make this even more unique and more related to everyday conversations," WhatsApp revealed.

The team has meticulously reviewed and refreshed the doodle artwork to better reflect a diverse range of people and objects.

Rounding off the updates, Android users will find navigation a breeze with the menu bar now conveniently located at the bottom of the screen aligning with the iPhone layout for a consistent cross-platform experience.

WhatsApp has made it easier to send photos and videos on iOS with a new attachment layout. Rather than a full-screen menu, an expandable tray has been added that allows users to see features more clearly when sending media, polls, documents and more.

The filters have also been enhanced, enabling users to swiftly locate the right conversations without having to scroll through their entire inbox. Users can now select between unread and group filters with just a tap, making it easier to catch up on missed messages or favourite group chats.

While WhatsApp hasn't provided a specific timeline for a full launch, anticipate these changes to be implemented on your phone shortly.
