WhatsApp users 'freaking out' over subtle change to app - but have you spotted it

BATH, UNITED KINGDOM - DECEMBER 19: A 12-year-old boy looks at an iPhone screen showing various social media apps including TikTok, Facebook and X, on December 19, 2023 in Bath, England. The amount of time children spend on screens each day rocketed during the Covid pandemic by more than 50 per cent, the equivalent of an extra hour and twenty minutes. Researchers say that unmoderated screen time can have long-lasting effects on a child's mental and physical health. Recently TikTok announced that every account belonging to a user below age 18 have a 60-minute daily screen time limit automatically set. (Photo by Matt Cardy/Getty Images)

WhatsApp users have been left unsettled by the slight and subtle changes made to the app, sparking fury. Eagle-eyed texters noticed the updated appearance over the past few days, claiming to be “thrown off” by the update.

Some have even demanded the change be reverted to its original form. Over the past fifteen years, inside conversation on the app, users can see the status and availability of the person they’re having a conversation with.

To see people's status, you’ll be able to see if they're “online”, or whether they’re composing a message - “typing” or “recording audio”. Until recently, those messages were not capitalised, but that’s all changed.

A number of WhatsApp users have noticed that those messages in the app now boast a capital letter at the beginning. TikTok user Ellie, known as @ellsdq, took to the social media platform to vent her frustrations.

In a video, she said: “Is anybody else getting really thrown off about the capital O on ‘online’, the capital T on ‘typing’, and capital R on ‘recording a voice note’ on WhatsApp? It’s throwing me off and it’s irritating me.”

Ellie’s video has been viewed over a massive 1.2 million times, racking up 61,600 likes and 1,025 comments. Other WhatsApp users vented their own annoyances about the subtle update - some didn’t seem to have a clue. Marcel wrote: “WhatsApp just lost its aesthetic.”

Sarah commented, “Omg I genuinely thought I was going (more) insane,” while Andreita said, “I THOUGHT NOBODY ELSE NOTICED IT.” Farah agreed: “YES. I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG.”

Luisa Orci wrote: “It is making me INSANE, it’s like an itch I can’t scratch.” Amy_oncloud9 said: “Do you think the updates team just had nothing to do this week and had to change something to look like they were working?”

MirahKerix replied: “Omg I've been staring at this for the last 2 days wondering why it looks so strange to me."

Some WhatsApp appeared completely unaware of the change, with Mazie Louise Head saying: “I have read receipts off and seen online off, I’m here for the peaceful life. I didn’t even realise.” Np_kjh95 asked, “What have I missed? .. I don’t get it?” while YT: reamogetse_s said, “Haven’t gotten this update, hope it never comes.”

The new update appears to have happened across both Android and iOS devices, however not everyone has received the change using the app.
