The White Lotus star Will Sharpe has been cast as the lead in Amadeus, a new Sky series that will reimagine the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The actor reunites with Giri/Haji writer Joe Barton and director Julian Farino for the project, which is based on Peter Shaffer’s stage play of the same name.

According to Deadline, Amadeus is set against the backdrop of Vienna in the late 18th century, following the 25-year-old prodigy as he arrives in the city determined to forge his own destiny.

Struggling with unemployment and the absence of his father, Amadeus finds an unlikely companion in a young singer named Constanze Weber Mozart, who will later become his wife.

Contanze's connections introduce Amadeus to court composer Antonio Salieri, sparking a series of events that will shape their lives and echo throughout history.

According to Sky, Barton's reimagining will feel "fresh, intimate and irreverent, and will feel at times in the hands of the characters themselves."

Further casting will be announced at later date, while production is slated to begin later this year.

Elsewhere, Sharpe will also be taking the lead role in a new rom-com Netflix series from Girls creator Lena Dunham.

Too Much follows a New York workaholic (Megan Stalter) who flees to London after breaking up with her partner.

However, things start looking up when she meets Felix (Sharpe), sparking a connection that's impossible to ignore.

Sharpe is perhaps best known for his role as Ethan Spiller in The White Lotus season two, which is set to return for a third season with another stacked cast including Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs, Sex Education's Aimee Lou Wood, Fargo's Carrie Coon and Gen V's Patrick Schwarzenegger.

The White Lotus airs on HBO Max in the US, and on Sky Atlantic, Sky Go and NOW in the UK.
