Who are Prince Philip's German family members who will attend the funeral?

Members of Prince Philip's German family will be able to attend his funeral on Saturday alongside the British Royal Family as they pay their respects to the Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip's older sisters all married German aristocrats after they were forced to leave their home in Greece when Philip was a toddler.

Because of anti-German sentiment after the Second World War, only Philip's mother, Princess Alice, was at her son's wedding to then-Princess Elizabeth in 1947.

But on Saturday, three of Philip's family will be able to attend his funeral, representing the cousins, nieces and nephews who also feel his loss.

The family paid tribute to him on social media shortly after hearing of his death, saying they had received the news with "great sadness" and had been looking forward to his 100th birthday in June.

In a post on Instagram, Prince Phillipp said: "Our grieving thoughts and condolences go with Her Majesty the Queen and all of your family in England. Prince Philip was a true gentleman with a great sense of humour, an incredible sense of duty and a wide range of interests... he was very familiar with us in Langenburg.

"An era is coming to an end and the world is losing a great personality."

Who is Prince Philipp of Hohenlohe-Langenburg?

Prince Phillipp of Hohenlohe-Langenbur is a grand-nephew of the Duke of Edinburgh.

In a statement to the Daily Mail he said: "It really is an incredible honour and we are all extremely touched and privileged to be included on behalf of the wider family."

Phillipp met Prince Charles back in 2013 when the British prince travelled to Germany to spend time with his father's family.

Phillipp also shared happy memories of Uncle Philip, explaining that he would go to Germany to attend family events like christenings or birthdays.

He told royal author Robert Hardman: "It was such a joy having a conversation with him. His memory was extraordinary.

"He could remember playing hide-and-seek in the castle when he was a boy, and he always enjoyed talking to the local people.

"He could switch from German to English and back, whether he was talking about Winston Churchill or the local wildlife."

Phillipp, 51, is married to Saskia Binder and has three children – two sons and a daughter.

The funeral may be a time for him to enjoy catching up with Prince Charles, from whom he has previously sought support.

In 2013, Phillipp's decision to set up wind turbines in his forest proved controversial and he sought advice and backing from Charles, who is passionate about environmental issues.

Charles went to Langenburg Castle in Germany that year where he spoke at a symposium organised by Phillipp.

Who is Prince Bernhard of Baden?

Prince Bernhard is the hereditary Prince of Baden and another of Prince Philip's great nephews.

He is the son of the duke's second sister who was called Theodora.

He is trained as a commercial lawyer and now manages the family's estate which includes a castle and wineries.

He is married to Stephanie Anne Kaul and they have three children, but he won't be able to be accompanied by any of them because of the COVID restrictions on numbers.

Prince Bernhard also met Charles in 2013, at the event run by Prince Phillipp.

Who is Prince Donatus, Landgrave of Hesse?

One of the family members who has been seen more frequently in the UK is Prince Donatus, who has been in Britain as recently as 2019 at the Windsor Horse Show.

Prince Donatus is a descendant of Queen Victoria and a cousin of Prince Philip.

He is head of the house of Hesse.

He is married with three children but won't be there with any of them.

Photographs of the prince in the UK show a warm relationship with the Queen. He was in Windsor in 2016 to help celebrate her 90th birthday and was seated next to Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge at one of the events.

In one photo from 2014, again at the Windsor Horse Show, the prince holds the Queen's hand after she had watched one of her horses.

Known as 'Don', he is the head of the House of Hesse, which Prince Philip's younger sisters married into.

His role now includes curating and showcasing the heritage of the house. Louis Mountbatten, who was Prince Philip's uncle, is one of the descendants of his house.

He also manages the Prinz von Hessen winery.

He is married to Countess Floria Franziska Marie-Luisa Erika von Faber-Castell, whose father is chairman of the board of the Faber-Castell pen and pencil company.

The three German relatives will have to follow COVID protocols in the lead up to the funeral, including adhering to quarantine rules and taking coronavirus tests.

They will have to observe social distancing during the funeral.

The funeral will be held on 17 April, with a procession through Windsor Castle at 2.40pm and a ceremony from 3pm. The funeral will be broadcast on BBC, ITV and streamed on Yahoo.
