Whoopi Goldberg, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and more comedians meet Pope Francis at 'the butt crack of dawn'

"The View" panelist also joked that she'd send an "email" to Pope Francis asking about his involvement in "Sister Act 3."

There is only one person Whoopi Goldberg will get up at the “butt crack of dawn” for, and it’s Pope Francis. 

The View panelist was among more than 100 comedians from 15 different countries to meet with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday morning. Other stars in attendance included Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chris Rock, Conan O’Brien, Tig Notaro, Stephen Merchant, and Ramy Youssef.

“So, we’re on our way over to see the Pope,” Goldberg explained in a video posted on her Instagram Story on Friday. “It is the butt crack of dawn, okay, but this is the time we’ve been told to come over. And I mean, who minds walking down these streets? Nobody. It’s beautiful.”

At the event, livestreamed by Vatican News, the Pope praised the comedians for their “power to spread peace and smiles” with their punchlines amid current world events, noting that humor has the unique ability to overcome social barriers and bring people together.

“You manage to make people smile, even while dealing with problems and events, large and small,” he said. “You denounce abuses of power. You give voice to forgotten situations. You highlight abuses. You point out inappropriate behavior.”

The Pope added, “While communication today often generates conflict, you know how to bring together diverse and sometimes contrary realities. How much we need to learn from you!”

He concluded his speech by asking everyone to “please pray for me in favor, with a smile, not against!”

Following his address, the Pope individually met with all of the comedians, shaking their hands and sharing smiles and laughs along the way. Goldberg spoke with reporters after the event, calling it a “great” experience and joking that she’d send the Pope an “email” about his potential involvement in Sister Act 3.

O’Brien also teased that he and his fellow comedians were shocked to be invited to the event. “We are all looking at each other thinking, ‘something’s wrong,'" he said. "We are in this beautiful, beautiful space in the Vatican and for some reason, they’ve let comedians in, which is always a mistake.”

Many of the comedians also posed for photos together afterward, too. Mike Birbiglia posted a snapshot of himself with O’Brien, Rock, Louis-Dreyfus, Notaro, Goldberg, and Youssef on Instagram with the caption: “Dream pope rotation.”

Jim Gaffigan also teased on Instagram that “the Pope told me I was his favorite comedian” amongst everyone present. “Such an incredible experience,” he wrote. “It felt like a meeting of everyone who couldn’t behave in church.”
