It's been a morning of change across the political map of Leicestershire, with entirely new seats being created and Labour strongholds falling to other candidates. Labour's former shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth lost Leicester South to independent Shockat Adam, while Leicester East went to the Conservatives.

With more than 100 former MPs standing down ahead of the election yesterday, there are millions of people waking up this morning to find they have new MPs representing them. Out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, more than 300 have changed hands since yesterday's General Election.

The election saw Labour sweep to power, thanks not just to the party's better results since Sir Keir Starmer took over from Jeremy Corbyn, but also thanks to Conservative voters switching allegiances or just staying at home.

The political landscape of the UK was completely transformed overnight with the Lib-Dems also making huge gains, and Reform and the Green Party winning seats. Meanwhile, the SNP lost dozens of MPs in Scotland.

While the city had some big shocks, mentioned above, there were also changes elsewhere in the county. North West Leicestershire, won by the Tories at the last few elections, went to the Labour party candidate Amanda Hack, who won with a majority of about 1,000 votes.

And Labour's Jeevun Sandher reclaimed the Loughborough seat for Labour after several years as a Conservative seat. However the neighbouring Mid Leicestershire seat - a new one for this election - was taken by the Tories.

The other county seats were all held by the Conservatives, who, at the time of writing, have managed to win only 121 seats - down by 250 seats from the 2019 result when Boris Johnson was in power.
