Spider-Man might be one of the most important characters of Marvel's Phase 4, but the Guardians are going to have their say on the MCU's future too.

James Gunn took part in a Facebook Live Q&A yesterday and offered a fascinating glimpse into the role that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 would play in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"One of the things I'm doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, it will take place after the next two Avengers movies and it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies," he teased.

"It's going to really expand the cosmic universe. We're going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy."

One such new character will likely be Richard Rider, AKA Nova, who Gunn confirmed is a name that "comes up occasionally as someone we might use" in future MCU outings, potentially during Phase 4.

Nova is basically Marvel's answer to Green Lantern, a kind of super-powered space policeman who is usually portrayed as a younger, rookie-type figure.

There's every chance we could see him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, especially as it's not expected to be released until 2020 following both Avengers: Infinity War and its as-yet-untitled sequel.

Earlier this year, Sean Gunn revealed that his brother was being "patient" with Vol 3 as "some of what happens with the Guardians is dependent on what happens with them in Infinity War".

"Those movies aren't finished yet, so until we kind of see where everything lands there that's going to have some bearing on what happens with the Guardians," he noted.

Avengers: Infinity War is released in UK cinemas on April 27, 2018 and US cinemas on May 4, 2018.
