Why Prince William and Kate Middleton Are Commanding "Secrecy" During Her Cancer Treatment

The couple has it under control.

Kate Middleton and Prince William have managed to retain command over the press amid her cancer treatment since her reveal, and it is 100 percent intentional, according to royal sources.

"It is really impressive how they are still able to command all this secrecy," royal historian Amanda Foreman told People in their latest issue of their ability to stay private and keep the details of her cancer treatment under wraps. "They are totally running this."

Such secrecy has come at a cost for the royals, more specifically for Middleton. After the Princess of Wales quietly remained out of the public eye following abdominal surgery—while the internet ran amuck with conspiracy theories—she came forward with the news about her cancer diagnosis on March 22, and asked the public to give her and William's family privacy during the trying time. In the time since, Middleton's condition has improved, and she attended Trooping the Colour on June 15.

In a recent Us Weekly report, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams spoke about about the media farce that led to Middleton's announcement, and said that the “out of control” speculation is very unlikely to "recur" ever again.

"Lessons should have been learned from what happened earlier," Fitzwilliams explained, noting that Kensington Palace would deem it most “appropriate” for them to speak up before rumors get out of hand. "I mean, if you’re not told at all, and months passed, clearly there’s speculation and that could happen again,” Fitzwilliams continued. “So, I’m sure that it will be handled in a different way.”

Even still, Middleton's cancer has allowed the husband-and-wife duo to become closer. The royal family's duties are on pause due to the forthcoming general election in England, and it's only been beneficial to the couple. “The announcement that the royals won’t be able to work as much has been unexpected, but it will allow Kate and William to spend more time together,” an Us Weekly insider shared on June 5. “They’ve been reconnecting and are closer than ever."
