Wicked is due out Nov. 27; Disney recently dated a Moana sequel for the same day. Wicked is an adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical, which was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel retelling The Wizard of Oz, which he published as Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Marc Platt and David Stone, who are producing the film, brought it to the stage when it debuted in 2003. It went on to become the No. 2 highest-grossing Broadway show of all time, behind The Lion King.
Wicked wrapped filming last month, with Chu and Grande confirming the news on social media. Wrote Grande: “I am so inexplicably thankful that we got to add so many soggy eyelashes to the collection.”
The Super Bowl remains a prime launching ground for Hollywood studios to debut first looks. This year, 30-second ads were going for $7 million. The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers has added interest thanks to music superstar Taylor Swift, who has become a Chiefs booster after beginning a relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
