Wiregrass storms topple trees in Houston, Henry counties

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Several trees and power lines fell in eastern Wiregrass after thunderstorms rolled through earlier in the day.

Trees and power lines went down along Jordan Avenue in Cowarts. One tree fell in the Granberry Crossroads area in Henry County, blocking a dirt driveway to a home.

The potentially dangerous winds that knocked down the trees and power lines did not come directly from thunderstorms but from a wake low. This small area of pressure developed behind the main line of storms that rolled through the Wiregrass Monday morning. Wake lows are usually short lived, but can be intense.

The first round of those thunderstorms continues moving south and east, giving Wiregrass a dry spell on Monday afternoon.

Another round of showers and potentially dangerous storms are coming early Tuesday morning, around 2-3:00 a.m. These storms could last until 9:00 a.m. and cause damaging winds and flooding.
