The Witcher announces Laurence Fishburne is joining season 4

The Witcher has announced that award-winning actor Laurence Fishburne will be joining season four of the hit series.

Confirming the news today (January 12), the Netflix show revealed that Fishburne will be playing the role of Regis in Liam Hemsworth's first season.

First introduced by Andrzej Sapkowski's novel Baptism of Fire, Regis is described as a "world-wise Barber-surgeon with a mysterious past" who will be joining Geralt of Rivia in his journey in season four to help rescue captured Ciri (Freya Allan).

Fishburne joins returning stars Allan, Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey as well as series newcomer Hemsworth, who will be taking over the role of Geralt from departing actor Henry Cavill.

Speaking about the casting, The Matrix actor said in a statement: "I'm very excited to be joining the cast and look forward to exploring the wondrous world of The Witcher."

Alongside his role as Morpheus in The Matrix films, Fishburne has also featured in the John Wick franchise, 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp and, more recently, The School for Good and Evil.

Season four is expected to begin production in spring this year, with the new episodes seeing Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer (Chalotra) separated across the "war-ravaged Continent" separately after the events of season three's finale.

A brief synopsis for the season adds: "If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again."

Meanwhile Chalotra spoke to Digital Spy last year about season four, revealing that she is "not worried" about the fans' response to Hemsworth's casting.

"I'm not worried. He's going to be brilliant. I really think so," she said. "I mean, we've spent five years going on this journey together, and I'm so excited for Henry.

"At some point, that had to come to an end, his portrayal of Geralt, and that's been incredible. We've had such a wonderful time with him. But also bringing in new people to this journey we're on is so exciting at this stage."

The Witcher seasons 1-3 and spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin are streaming on Netflix. Season 4 has been confirmed.
