The Witcher Finds Its Zoltan: Danny Woodburn to Play Fan Favorite Dwarf in Season 4, Plus More Casting News

The Witcher is beefing up its Season 4 cast with a trio of names that should be very familiar to fans of both the books and video games upon which the show is based.

Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld) has been cast as Zoltan, a popular dwarf character who appears in both the books and games; Sharlto Copley (Powers) will portray Leo Bonhart, a fearsome bounty hunter from the books; and James Purefoy (The Following) will play Skellen, a key book character who serves as a spy and advisor for Emhyr.

As previously reported, Laurence Fishburne (black-ish) is also joining the cast of Season 4. Fishburne will play Regis, a character introduced in Baptism of Fire, the third novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series. Netflix officially describes Regis as a “world-wise Barber-surgeon with a mysterious past who joins Geralt on his journey.”

The Witcher wrapped its third season in July 2023, with Geralt en route to rescue Ciri — or the girl everyone thinks is Ciri — from Nilfgaard’s clutches. The finale marked Henry Cavill’s final episode playing Geralt; the role will be portrayed by Liam Hemsworth when the show returns for Season 4.

“After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out Season 3, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other,” according to Netflix’s official synopsis of Season 4. “If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire — and finding one another again.”

Though it’s anyone’s guess which familiar faces might pop up throughout Season 4, the only returning cast members confirmed by Netflix are Anya Chalotra as Yennefer, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier.

As previously reported, the role of Geralt is being taken over by newcomer Liam Hemsworth in Season 4, and Laurence Fishburne will appear as Regis.

Are you sitting down? This one’s a lot: So, Henry Cavill revealed in October 2022 that he was departing The Witcher after three seasons, passing the torch “with reverence” to Liam Hemsworth, encouraging his successor to “enjoy diving in [to the role of Geralt] and seeing what you can find.”

Scheduling conflicts were cited as the reason for Cavill’s departure, which was announced just days after the actor confirmed that he was flying back to the big screen for another Superman movie.

Then… another plot twist! Following a major shake-up at DC Studios, Cavill announced just two months later that his time as Superman had, in fact, come to an end. (David Corenswet has since been cast as the DC Extended Universe’s new Man of Steel, debuting in 2025’s Superman: Legacy.)

After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to [James Gunn and Peter Safran’s] hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill said in a statement. “I wish them and all involved … the best of luck.”

This led many to wonder if Cavill’s now-open schedule might allow him to return as Geralt, but those hopes have since been dashed.

File this one under “highly unlikely.” Unless a cameo is being kept tightly under wraps, we have no reason to believe that Henry Cavill will grace Witcher fans with his presence in Season 4. As far as we know, there won’t be an elaborate explanation for the change in Geralt’s appearance; Hemsworth will simply take over the role.
