Witham General Election 2024 results as Priti Patel retains seat for 14th year

Priti Patel has retained her seat in Essex in a night of huge losses for her party. The Conservative candidate won her seat with the majority of the votes and will continue to represent the area in parliament.

The high-profile politician who has been MP for Witham since 2010 was re-elected with 18,827 votes. Labour came in second with Rumi Chowdhury getting 13,682 votes.

Timothy Blaxhill with Reform UK came in third with 9,870 votes and Green's James Abbott followed with 3,539 votes and Ashley Thompson with Lib Dems got 3,439 votes. Chelsey Jay representing the people not the party got 1,246 votes.

The Tories have lost many of their seats in Essex - and nationally Conservatives have dropped, conceding hundreds of seats to Labour. Soon to be the new prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said the UK was waking up this morning to “the sunlight of hope”, which was “shining once again on a country with the opportunity after 14 years to get its future back”.

Outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak said: “The Labour Party has won this General Election and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory.” Mr Sunak added: “Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides.

“And it’s something that should give us all confidence in our country’s stability and future.The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight, there is much to learn… and I take responsibility for the loss. To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry.”
