Police in Tenerife are investigating a possible sighting of missing teenager Jay Slater, his mum has said.

Debbie Duncan flew out to the Spanish island on Tuesday after her son was reported missing the day before. Jay, 19, had travelled to the Canary Islands with his friends Lucy and Brad to attend the NRG music festival, but disappeared after staying out with some new friends on Sunday night.

The search is now in its sixth day but Debbie, from Oswaldtwistle, has vowed to remain in Tenerife "for as long as it takes", the MEN reports.

Debbie has claimed there had been a possible sighting of her missing son. She claimed someone had come forward to say they saw somebody walking "back down the road" and "sat on a bench" with two other men at around 6pm on Monday.

“All I know is that I am going to stay here for as long as it takes, I'm not going home unless it's with Jay,” Debbie told the Mail.

The last reported contact anyone had with Jay was at around 8.50am on Monday morning when he spoke to his friend Lucy. She said that Jay had told her he had missed the bus and was planning on walking back to their apartment.

Jay's mobile phone then cut off, with his last location showing as the Rural de Teno park; a mountainous area popular with hikers which is an 11-hour walk away from where he was staying.

Lucy told the Manchester Evening News one of the people Jay had met on Sunday night had driven them back to his apartment in a hire car and Jay had not realised how far away it was.

“He’s ended up out in the middle of nowhere. Jay was obviously thinking he would be able to get home from there,” she said. “But then in the morning he’s set off walking, using his maps on his phone and ended up in the middle of mountains with nothing around.”

Jay, an apprentice bricklayer who is currently a student at accrington-and-rossendale-college>Accrington and Rossendale College, was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with shorts and trainers and carrying a black bag.
