Labour maintained its iron grip on Wolverhampton City Council as there were no surprises at the local elections. The city has long been a Labour stronghold and that was never likely to change with the Conservatives lagging in the polls after 14 years in Government.

Election day drama was never going to come in Wolverhampton as the results went to script. In fact, not much changed at all.

Labour ended the day with one more gain than it started with. And there was some excitement in the Merry Hill ward following a close contest between the Labour and Conservative candidates.

Labour's Ben Evans snatched the seat for Labour, winning by fewer than 100 votes as Conservative Chris Haynes lost his seat. Another close battle came in Bushbury North, where the Conservatives' Simon Bennett - the group deputy leader - clung on by 50 votes to narrowly defeat his Labour rival.

It was tight in Penn too. Conservative Paul Singh just about saw off a threat to his seat from Labour, winning by 1,733 votes to 1,656.

It certainly could have been worse for the Tories in Wolverhampton as they avoided major losses some may have feared to maintain their small opposition group. The party has its core area of the city in the more affluent western edges in places like Tettenhall and Wightwick and they still came out and voted Conservative despite the party's national struggles.

The council said: "All results are now in, and the political make-up of the City of Wolverhampton Council is now 47 Labour councillors, 12 Conservative councillors, one Independent councillor, with Labour gaining one councillor." That result means Labour still enjoys its massive majority at the Civic Centre and it's very much business as usual in Wolverhampton.
