Woman, 20, facing charges after stolen vehicle crashes into RCMP detachment

A 20-year-old woman from Waycobah First Nation is facing a handful of charges, including impaired driving, after a stolen vehicle crashed into an RCMP detachment early Thursday morning.

Cpl. Guillaume Tremblay said no one was hurt, but the vehicle also hit a parked car outside the RCMP building and both vehicles are likely writeoffs.

He said Inverness County officers received a report of an impaired driver on Highway 105 heading toward Waycobah at high speed in a Chevrolet Equinox.

RCMP attempted a traffic stop on Reservation Road, but the driver refused to pull over, Tremblay said.

She then turned around and drove at a police vehicle, narrowly missing the passenger side after the driver of the police vehicle took "evasive action," Tremblay said.

The exterior and interior of the Waycobah RCMP detachment building suffered "extensive" damage, Tremblay said, but he couldn't specify what that entailed.

"Our officers did an assessment to make sure that clearly it was safe to keep the detachment open and it doesn't affect current operations at this time," he said.

The driver wasn't hurt in the crash but she was taken to hospital for a medical assessment, Tremblay said.

She refused to give a sample for a breathalyzer, he said.
