Woman Helped to Safety Amid Deadly Flash Flooding in Sicily

A woman was rescued from flash flooding in the Sicilian city of Catania on Tuesday, October 26, footage recorded by Marco Scardaci showed.

In the video, a man can be seen wading through the rushing floodwater to reach a woman stranded in the middle of the street. He holds the woman’s arm as they both slowly traverse several inches of water to a nearby store.

At least two people died and another was said to be missing by October 26, Il Giornale reported.

A 53-year-old man from Catania became the second victim of the floods, after a 67-year-old man was killed on Sunday in the town of Scordia.

Emergency services are still searching for the first victim’s wife, the paper said.

3BMeteo reported that up to 350 mm (13.8 inches) of rain fell in the province in the space of just 72 hours. The area’s typical annual rainfall is approximately 600 mm (23.6 inches), they said.
