A woman has received a top award for her charitable work with children from Belarus and Ukrainian families.

Alison Shepherd has been recognised by the Rotary Club of Northallerton for her commitment to hosting children and families affected by the Chernobyl disaster and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

For many years, Ms Shepherd has arranged month-long visits to the UK for children from Belarus who were affected by the Chernobyl nuclear power station explosion.

During their stay, the children were hosted by British families, given medical checks, and taken on educational outings.

However, due to the situation in Ukraine and Belarus, the visits have been paused.

Ms Shepherd has since focused her efforts on helping Ukrainian families seeking refuge in the region, providing them with assistance and ensuring their well-being.

She was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship, Rotary International's highest honour, by David Ison, the president of the Rotary Club of Northallerton, at a Christmas lunch.

Ms Shepherd said: "I was truly humbled to receive the award, which came as a shock and surprise.

"It is my great pleasure to have been able to help so many children from Belarus, and supporting Ukrainians fleeing the terrible war in their homeland was a natural thing to do.

"I feel very blessed to have all of these wonderful people in my life."
