Woman seriously injured after falling from M60 bridge before car fire causes delays

A woman has been left with serious injuries after falling from a bridge over the M60. It was one of two major incidents in close proximity on the motorway near Stockport this afternoon (April 19).

Traffic was stopped in both directions at 3.30pm as Greater Manchester Police responded to concerns for the welfare of a woman, between junctions one at Stockport Pyramid and 27 at Portwood. Emergency services arrived on the scene, including an air ambulance.

GMP confirmed the woman's injuries were believed to be serious following the incident. Around an hour later, two fire engines from Stockport and Wythenshawe responded to a car fire on the clockwise M60, near junction one.

Thankfully, the driver was not harmed by the blaze and was able to make their way to the hard shoulder, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said. Dramatic footage showed flames soaring from the vehicle on the M60.

The two incidents led to long delays on the M60 near Stockport earlier this evening. All lanes reopened at around 7.30pm.
