As Donald Trump’s presidency continues to heighten tensions across the globe, one woman has revealed how she separated from her husband of 22 years after learning that he was planning on voting for the divisive Republican.

Gayle McCormick, 73, revealed that she separated from husband Bill after he revealed that he was planning on voting for Mr Trump during the Presidential primary elections.

Describing the moment that Bill announced his decision during a lunch with friends, Gayle said: ‘My jaw kind of dropped, and this was before the primaries, so it wasn’t even known yet who was going to be the nominee, and I didn’t speak for the rest of the luncheon and we didn’t talk about it.’

Gayle, a self-described ‘Democrat leaning toward socialist’, was so shocked at her husband’s choice that she felt separation was the only option.

‘I was incensed,’ she recalled.

‘I said, “I can’t believe that somebody I could be married to could vote for someone whose track record is so obviously poor in terms of civil liberties, his feelings about women, how he treats people in general.”‘

When it came down to the primary vote, Bill eventually opted not to vote for Mr Trump, and instead threw his support behind House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich, while Gayle opted for veteran socialist Bernie Sanders.

But despite their differences, the couple are not legally divorcing – and will still go on holiday together.

‘It really came down to the fact I needed to not be in a position where I had to argue my point of view 24/7. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing that’, Gayle added.
