Police have appealed for witnesses after a woman suffered serious injuries when she was hit by a van in Gateshead.

Northumbria Police were alerted to the incident on Bensham Road near the junction with Barrington Place shortly before 4pm on Wednesday, May 15. It was reported that a white Citroen Relay minibus had been travelling east when, for reasons yet to be established, it struck a female pedestrian on the road.

Emergency services attended the scene to tend to a woman in her 30s who had suffered serious injuries. She was taken to hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition.

The driver of the minibus remained at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries. Part of the road was closed for several hours but it has since been re-opened.

Officers from Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit have launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision - and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They are particularly keen to understand the moments leading up to the collision and would like to hear from motorists who were driving in the area at the time, and any witnesses who may have dashcam footage or CCTV.

Northumbria Police encouraged anyone with information to get in touch using the 'Report' page of the Northumbria Police website or by calling 101, quoting log number: NP-20240515-0756.
