A woman has shared a clever trick to keep flies out of the kitchen, and it doesn't cost a penny. The weather is (slowly) getting warmed and with that many of us will have our doors and windows open a lot more, but this can unfortunately invite unwanted guests like flies.

The irritating buzzing sound they make as they zip around the room is enough to annoy anyone. However, one woman believes she's found a solution to prevent these insects from invading her kitchen, and the ingenious method didn't cost her anything - although it does involve a few coins.

In the Facebook group Hinch Army Cleaning Tips, the woman disclosed her method for keeping flies at bay, reports the Mirror. She posted a picture of a clear plastic bag hanging from her kitchen window. Inside the bag are some water and six shiny pennies.

She explained: "After seeing someone post about the water-filled bag and coins to stop flies, I thought I'd give it a try. We normally always have about five/six small flies just flying about in the middle of the kitchen. So annoying. Well since the bag has been up I haven't had a single fly in the kitchen. Amazing."

Her post quickly gained traction, with many people curious about how it works. She did some research on the topic to provide them with an answer.

She asserts: "The water and the pennies create a prism that reflects colours and also projects the image of the water. Flies don't like water and they don't like the colours given off from the pennies."

Continuing, she stated: "Flies have compound eyes, so the bags look like a giant body of water to them, therefore they leave."

The effectiveness of this method, however, is up for debate. However, numerous commenters claimed they had tested it and found no flies in their house.

One delighted respondent reported: "It's been up since 9am and we've had no new flies in the house yet. So far so good! ! " Another user chimed in: "This trick also works outdoors. I hang one on my balcony and the flies are gone."

Another added: "This is amazing. I'm going to give it a go."

A different approach was offered by another user, who suggested hanging a bag of Coke mixed with sugar or honey outside to deter wasps.
