The Conservatives have 121 seats and a 23.7 per cent vote share.

The Liberal Democrats have won in 71 constituencies with 12.3 per cent of the overall vote, while Reform UK has 14.3 per cent of the vote, translating to success in four seats.

A record number of Conservative Cabinet members lost their seats, beating the previous record of seven defeats in 1997.

They include Grant Shapps and Penny Mordaunt. Liz Truss, the former prime minister, also lost her seat.

Rishi Sunak shouldered the burden for a “sobering verdict”, as competing Tory factions began their battle over the diminished party’s future.

Mr Sunak said it had been a “difficult night” and apologised to Conservative candidates who had lost their seats, as he held onto his own Richmond and Northallerton constituency.

Meanwhile, a jubilant Sir Keir told a victory rally in London that Britain could now “get its future back”.

He told activists: “We did it”, adding: “Change begins now.”
