The UK is waking up today to the news that Labour has won the 2024 general election.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer will become the UK's prime minister after his party secured enough seats for a majority government. Labour has won at least 326 seats seats, meaning the party has a working majority in Parliament.

Rishi Sunak's party suffered heavy losses after trailing behind in the opinion polls throughout the election campaign.

Meanwhile, it was a good night for Reform who won their first seats in Parliament, including Nigel Farage who was victorious in Clacton.

Once all of the results are in, Sir Keir will visit the King at Buckingham Palace to ask for his permission to form a new government. Once the prime minister has been appointed by the monarch, he will head to Downing Street.

Before heading into No 10 to get to work, the new prime minister will likely make a public statement outside the famous black door, his first address to the nation as the new government leader.

One of the first things the new PM then has to do is appoint a Cabinet, which consists of senior ministers who will oversee the various government departments. Usually, the PM will invite each MP he is appointing to a senior role to meet with him at No 10.

Ashton-under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner is currently Sir Keir's deputy leader, so it is likely she will be appointed as the new deputy prime minister.

There will also be several calls to world leaders for the PM to make as well as discussions around the first key policies for the government to announce.
