Who won the North East mayoral election in 2024?

North East voters have made history by electing the region's first ever mayor.

The new mayor of the North East will represent around two million people across Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham following a multi-billion pound devolution deal with the Government. The deal gives the region new funding and decision-making powers and is of huge significance to its future.

Six candidates were in the running for the honour: Labour’s Kim McGuinness, Conservative Guy Renner-Thompson, Independent Jamie Driscoll, the Green Party’s Andrew Gray, Liberal Democrat Aidan King, and Reform UK’s Paul Donaghy.

Kim McGuinness won the election with an overall majority. The results looked like this:
