World War II Kiss Recreated 70 Years On

One of the most defining images of the end of World War Two is being recreated ahead of the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

The photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse in New York's Times Square quickly became a symbol of the war's end, summing up the jubilation of victory.

In the spirit of that celebration the Royal British Legion is asking members of the public to share a photograph of themselves smooching a loved one in the lead up to VE Day on Twitter, with the hashtag #KissforVEDay.

A list of famous faces have already re-enacted the scene ahead of the anniversary on 8 May.

Among them are actress Hayley Atwell kissing boyfriend Evan Jones, dancer Darcey Bussell and Afghanistan veteran Ben McBean, actor Tom Hardy and his wife Charlotte.

TV presenter Susanna Reid shares a tender moment with her father Barry, Chief Scout and former SAS reservist Bear Grylls shares a kiss with his wife Shara, and historian Dan Snow puckers up with Chelsea Pensioner Marjorie Cole.

All the pictures will be shared on the Legion's commemorative website, www.veday.org.uk.

The site also features personal recollections of VE Day, including the memories of people such as actress Barbara Windsor and broadcaster Michael Parkinson.
