Many of us are probably not aware that a competition for the world’s best cheese exists. But ladies and gentleman, it does.

The 2017 World Cheese Awards took place on Friday at London’s Tobacco Dock. A judging panel made up of 230 makers, buyers, retailers and writers tasted and examined over 3000 cheeses from around the world.

And you’ll never guess where the winning fromage came from.

Good old Blighty.

Cornwall’s Cornish Kern took the top spot after being awarded a whopping 75 out of 80 points. The medium-hard cheese is described as “firm to the cut but slightly flaky in the middle, buttery with caramel notes and a deep savoury aroma.”

Made by Lynher Dairies Cheese Company, it takes 16 months for the Alpine-style cheese’s flavour to develop.

Judge Cathy Strange said the Cornish Kern was “visually stunning, with its standout dark rind.” The global executive coordinator for Whole Foods Market added that it had “an amazing age and a complexity, which keeps on coming. This is a super cheese and I would be glad to have it on any table.”

Of course, the cheese’s creator was over the moon, saying: “I’m on top of the cheese world!”

“Cornish Kern is a new concept so to see it come to this is so exciting for the company, and a great start for this cheese’s career,” added Lynher Dairies Cheese Company’s technical manager, Sarah Barnes.

If you’d like to try some other top cheeses, here’s a few that just missed the mark at the awards: Quattro Portoni Caseificio’s Italian Blu Di Bufala, Almenland Stollenkaese’s Austrian Capellaro and Dalewood Fromage’s South African Dalewood Huguenot.

Happy eating.
