Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds responds to Birmingham City ‘request’ for USA fixture

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds insists he has no interest in taking their League One fixture with Birmingham City to America.

It was reported on Monday that Blues had suggested moving their League One clash with Wrexham to the United States. Blues are owned by US investment firm Knighthead Capital Management, while Wrexham were bought out by actors Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020.

NFL icon Tom Brady is also involved behind-the-scenes at Blues as a minority investor, meaning the club’s upcoming fixtures with Wrexham are an attractive proposition to broadcasters here and across the pond.

No EFL fixture has ever been played outside the United Kingdom and the request is said to have been dismissed out of hand by league officials. Reynolds has now reassured Wrexham’s supporters that he has no interest in breaking English football tradition by moving league fixtures to other countries.

One Wrexham fan tweeted Reynolds and McElhenney, saying: “Goes against every single one of the ‘guiding principles’ you stated publicly before even buying the club. Let’s not start getting too greedy and breaking promises.” Reynolds swiftly responded: “I agree. And that’s why there have been no talks.”

Blues and Wrexham have only played nine times before and the two teams haven’t met since a League Cup match in 2006. There hasn’t been a league clash between them since Blues defeated Wrexham 5-2 in February 1995.
