Wychavon renews pledge to support armed forces veterans

Wychavon has vowed to continue its support for UK military veterans.

The district council has reaffirmed its commitment to both serving and ex-service personnel and their families through the re-signing of The Armed Forces Covenant.

The pledge ensures that service to the country does not put these individuals at a disadvantage when they require public or commercial services, and places an onus on organisations to consider the specific needs of injured veterans or grieving armed forces families.

The formal recommitment ceremony took place at St Helena Court, located on the ground of the former Norton Barracks site, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its inauguration.

A collaboration between Wychavon and the Rooftop Housing Group, the development was built with a near £1.3 million investment.

The project resulted in the building of 10 energy-efficient affordable homes, specifically for the support of veterans and their families.

Cllr Rob Adams, Wychavon’s armed forces champion, said: "I was proud to re-sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Wychavon and recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to look after our ex-servicemen and women.

"We don't want any veteran to feel alone when we, and the partners we work with, can help in so many different ways, it's just a matter of asking.

“If you’re a veteran – whether you have served one day or 50 years in the forces – and you need support, please reach out and ask, we’re here to help.”

Rebecca Pitt, executive director of investment for Rooftop, said: "We are proud to support those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families.

"As a housing association, we will continue to work with local authority partners and other agencies to provide accommodation for veterans and promote greater understanding across our organisation and external partners about the levels of support required and the additional benefits or services which may be available to veterans."
