Wycombe headteacher says his school ‘does not endorse’ Steve Baker in election

A Wycombe headteacher has said his school ‘did not endorse’ Steve Baker at the 2024 general election.

Stephen Nunn also claimed that the incumbent MP for Wycombe had not visited Hamilton Academy but that his Labour election rival Emma Reynolds had.

In a July 3 letter to parents and carers of children at the independent state primary, he also confirmed that the school would remain open on polling day as normal and would not function as a polling station.

His letter, seen by the Bucks Free Press, reads: “It has been brought to my attention that Hamilton has featured regularly in some of Steve Baker’s campaign materials.

“To be clear about Mr Baker’s involvement in the school: I have been here for 10 years now and have never met Mr Baker, nor has he ever supported or visited Hamilton in that time, to my knowledge (other than for his election photo opportunity).

“We have had a visit from candidate Emma Reynolds following our inspection, but I do not believe this has been mentioned in her campaign publicity.”

The headteacher added that schools should be politically neutral, and that Hamilton would ‘not endorse’ any candidate.

Steve Baker told the Free Press: “I accepted an invitation and specifically checked all was well. As far as I’m concerned, this is an unfortunate internal disagreement in the school and no business of mine.”
