Labour’s hold on Wythenshawe and Sale East has continued after Mike Kane was re-elected at this year’s general election.

Mr Kane won 20,581 votes, meaning his vote share decreased slightly compared to 2019 figures. This year, he won 52.5 per cent. Last time out, he claimed 53.8pc.

He was first elected to the area in 2014, and Labour have held the seat in Wythenshawe continuously since 1964.

“Residents have understood Labour’s message of hope and change,” said Mr Kane in his acceptance speech. “I am proud to deliver this for them. The Tories have stolen that future and we will give it them back.

“Thank you for putting your trust in me. I will not let you down.”

It means that Labour won all six constituencies in Manchester, despite boundary changes resulting in parts of Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside, and Trafford having been added to its seats.

That’s part of the party’s landslide victory nationally, with exit polls suggesting Sir Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister with a majority of 170. He will be the first Labour inhabitant of Downing Street in 14 years.

In second place was Reform with 5,986 votes. They pipped the Conservatives in second place by just short of 500 votes.
