Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has hinted about his future amid links with the upcoming vacancy at Liverpool.

The German club claimed their first–ever league title with a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday. Alonso’s side won the Bundesliga with five games to spare and could still finish with a league-record points tally after remaining unbeaten throughout the campaign across all competitions.

Alonso recently ruled out the possibility of leaving Leverkusen after being heavily linked to become Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool. However, shortly after winning the Bundesliga, the Leverkusen boss mentioned what the future could hold.

“When I feel that the team is behind me, the feeling that they want to believe, it’s much easier,” Alonso said, as reported by the Mirror. “That was my great enjoyment, that I had the feeling that the team was really committed, and once you have that it’s much easier. I don’t know what it will mean for the future, but at the moment it feels pretty great.”

Alonso’s comments could either be interpreted as the Spaniard reviewing his next steps or simply not knowing what his side will be capable of achieving beyond this season. However, it would be a swift U-turn for Alonso to be weighing up his future, given the strength of his recent comments about his commitment to Leverkusen.

“Last week I had a meeting [with club officials] and informed them of the decision to continue being coach of Bayer Leverkusen," Alonso revealed. "After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. I feel this is the right place to be for me as a young coach.

“My job at Bayer is not over. I want to help the club, help the players to develop, the board is great … it’s all fantastic here.”
