Xbox series X stock - live: Smyths Toys restock available now, plus latest news from Game, Microsoft and more

Update: The Xbox series X is in stock at Smyths Toys and Asda through Xbox All Access. Read on for more details.

The Xbox series X has been reliably sold out since launching in late 2020. Despite the availability of the all-inclusive Xbox All Access scheme – the official pay monthly alternative to paying £449 for the console – the no-strings-attached console itself is tricky to find in stock in the UK.

The Xbox series S – a cheaper and less powerful version of the console – is easier to find in stock (£242.22, Amazon.co.uk), but bottlenecks in production coupled with surging demand has left the more advanced Xbox largely missing from retailers like Very, Smyths Toys, Game, Argos, Asda and Amazon. When the Xbox series X does appear, the console sells out in minutes as customers snap up the available units as soon as they arrive.

That’s why we launched our Xbox stock tracking liveblog, where we track every UK stockist at once to bring you live stock alerts as they happen. We’ll also bring you tips and advice for beating the crowds to bag an Xbox series X, including which sites to pay attention to, deals and discounts on Xbox accessories, and how to register your interest for new consoles before they go on sale.

Best Xbox Game Pass Ultimate titles

(Microsoft)

Since its introduction in 2017, Microsoft has offered gamers great value with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Much like a Netflix subscription, users can pay a monthly fee to access a library of over 100 titles for playing on Xbox consoles, PC and even via the cloud.

This is a great way to try plenty of excellent games that might otherwise have passed you by and it’s regularly updated on a monthly basis on a revolving door policy. When new games come in, old ones tend to go out.

Titles such as Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 are currently available through the service with plenty of others that are worth your time.

The best TVs for gaming on Xbox series X

14:32 , Steve Hogarty

With all this focus on where to buy an Xbox series X, let’s not overlook the thing you’re plugging it into. Is your TV ready for Microsoft’s next-generation console?

The Xbox series X can technically output at 8K resolution, though most games will only ever be running at a maximum of 4K. That’s the highest resolution most reasonably priced TVs can reach today.

If your TV only goes up to 1080p, games will still look great but you won’t be getting the most out of your new Xbox series X. To help you upgrade your set without breaking the bank, we’ve pulled together a list of the best 4K TVs for entertainment, movies and gaming.

Where is the Xbox series S in stock?

13:34 , Steve Hogarty

 (Microsoft)
(Microsoft)

Demand for the less powerful and more petite Xbox series S is much smaller and so the console is easy to find in stock pretty much everywhere.

Thing is, the Xbox series S is still a next-generation console, a brilliant games machine capable of playing all the same games as the Xbox series X. The console is backwards compatible with older Xbox games and has slightly lower grade components, meaning some of the fancier graphics options dialled down. It doesn’t have a disc drive either, so you can only play downloaded games. The hard drive is also half as big, so you need to redownload games more often.

There’s now an official Xbox series S + Fortnite + Rocket League bundle on the shelves too, costing £249.99. You can find it at Very, Game, Amazon and more.

‘Cyberpunk 2077’ next-gen version is here

11:30 , Steve Hogarty

The next-generation version of Cyberpunk 2077 is finally upon us.

Anyone who owns the original game can upgrade to the fancier version today by downloading a patch 1.5.

On Xbox series X it’s a 63GB update, so you might want to get it downloading now if you plan on playing once you get home. There’s a free demo version available too, in case you want a little tester of CD Projekt Red’s dystopian sci-fi RPG.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.5 is now available with a free trial for PS5 and Xbox Series X

There are consoles available at Smyths Toys

10:54 , Steve Hogarty

A handful of Smyths Toys stores have the Xbox series X available to click and collect.

As we write, there are four consoles in Aberdeen and seven in Hull, with more Xboxes scattered around the country at random.

It’s a roll of the dice whether there’s one near you, but click the “select store” button on the product page and whack your post code in to check local availability.

Check out some of the accessories too, if you’re in the market for controllers. You can pick up the wireless pads in shock blue, pulse red and robot white. You can also get the pro-level elite controller for £159.99 (Microsoft.com).

10:15 , Steve Hogarty

Here on the IndyBest liveblog we spend a lot of time scrounging around the internet looking for what few available consoles are out there, which might lead you to believe that it’s no longer possible to wander into a bricks-and-mortar store and exchange your moolah for an Xbox series X, like our grandparents used to do it.

But get this, it’s often still possible to find an Xbox out there in the wild. It’s rare, and we can’t guarantee you’ll find a console this way, but it’s worth popping into a local shop if you’re passing by. Here are some hot hot tips.

  • We’ve heard tell of consoles sometimes appears on the shelves at Argos, Smyths Toys and Game. To a lesser extent we’ve heard of John Lewis & Partners and Currys having physical stock.

  • AO has a handful of physical stores around the country, and we’ve been told the Xbox sometimes pops up there.

  • Enter your post code on a retailer’s online product page to check for local stock. If you can, scroll around to peek at other stores farther away from you.

  • Xbox not in stock? Don’t lose hope. Many stores don’t log returns or uncollected Xbox pre-orders back into their stock systems. Pop into your local shop in person and ask a member of staff.

Smyths Toys has All Access

09:56 , Steve Hogarty

There’s still plenty of availability of Microsoft’s new console at Smyths Toys, where the retailer is selling the Xbox as part of the all-inclusive Xbox All Access programme.

With the scheme, you get the console and 24 months of Game Pass Ultimate – the Netflix-style games-on-demand service – by paying in instalments of £28.99 per month for two years. It’s a good deal, and Game Pass Ultimate is the Xbox’s greatest feature.

Could Amazon restock today?

09:24 , Steve Hogarty

Amazon is overdue a restock, and it could happen as soon as today.

The retailer has been missing the Xbox series X since early December, when it treated us to a giant restock, the biggest and longest-lasting we’ve seen at Amazon since launch. Since then it’s been all quiet on the Bezos front.

The world’s largest online retailer is predicted to have new PS5 stock arriving this week, so we’re hoping that fresh Xbox stock will follow. If you can’t wait until then, Amazon currently has the less powerful Xbox series S in stock with a free copy of Rocket League and Fortnite (£249, Amazon.co.uk).

Xbox All Access available from Asda

09:09 , Steve Hogarty

It looks like Asda still has Xbox series X bundles available through Xbox All Access.

If you’re happy to pay £28.99 a month for 24 months and can pass their credit checks, Xbox All Access is pretty good value. As well as a brand new Xbox series X, you will also have full access to Game Pass Ultimate which normally costs £10.99 per month.

‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök’ preview

Tuesday 15 February 2022 17:03 , Jasper Pickering

If you were a fan of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla which originally released in November 2020, then the latest entry is the biggest expansion yet for the series, according to Ubisoft.

Dawn of Ragnarök (£34.99, Argos.co.uk) is the upcoming third DLC (downloadable content) to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla after Wrath of the Druids and The Siege of Paris. Where the former two took Ubisoft’s Viking saga to Ireland and France respectively, this new instalment will explore the further reaches of Norse mythology in the dwarven realm of Svartelheim.

We were shown a preview of this latest expansion prior to its 10 March 2022 release date. If you want to find out more details about what to expect, then read our full preview of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök.

‘Dying Light 2’ review

Tuesday 15 February 2022 16:01 , Jasper Pickering

February has been a particularly busy month for game releases with the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring, it’s the perfect time to get your hands on an Xbox series X.

Dying Light 2 (£54.99, Currys.co.uk) was another big release that came out earlier this month that combines parkour with the survival-horror genre.

In our review, we said: “Dying Light 2 is at its best when it has the freedom to explore its environments.

“Running through, around and over the city’s inhabitants is the kind of gameplay that would bring players back to visit after the first roll of the credits but when that freedom of movement is taken away is when those cracks start to show. While only occasionally mired by technical issues and stopgaps, Dying Light 2 makes confident attempts to breathe life into a tired genre.”

The Xbox series X headsets to look out for

Tuesday 15 February 2022 13:59 , Jasper Pickering

The Xbox series X is often bundled with a gaming headset to bump up the price and stave off scalpers.

The console doesn’t come with its own headset, but it’s compatible with all existing headsets for the Xbox One. The Xbox wireless controller (£54.99, Currys.co.uk) also has a headphone jack, so you can plug in your regular headphones to have game audio play through them rather than your TV, which is ideal if you’re sharing a room with somebody you don’t want to disturb.

If you need to upgrade or you don’t have your own headset yet, Microsoft sells the wireless Xbox series X headset separately (£89.99, Game.co.uk). Lots of third-party manufacturers make Xbox compatible headsets too. We’ve rounded up the best gaming headsets you can buy today.

Across the aisle, open world robo-dino hunting adventure Horizon Forbidden West debuts on PS5 and PS4 this week. How to pre-order ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’

Tuesday 15 February 2022 11:53 , Jasper Pickering

If you’re looking for something a bit more family-friendly then you can do a lot worse than TT Games’s Lego series. They’ve been around since 2005 and combine fun slapstick humour with huge franchises such as Harry Potter, Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park.

Now they’re retreading familiar ground with an updated take on Lego Star Wars. This new title will feature all nine of the films from Phantom Menace up until The Rise of Skywalker with hundreds of playable characters.

If you pre-order the game from Smyths Toys (£49.99, Smythstoys.com) you can also get your hands on a free Lego toy as an added bonus. Find out more about how to pre-order the latest Lego Star Wars game.

‘Rainbow Six Extraction' review

Tuesday 15 February 2022 11:27 , Jasper Pickering

Looking for a new game to play on your Xbox series X? Rainbow Six Extraction is the follow-up to the popular competitive shooter Rainbow Six Siege. Rather than fighting other players online, teams must work together to combat an alien threat using operators and weapons featured in Siege.

In our review, we said “When Extraction plays well, it plays excellently. That’s no doubt that, in part due to the strong foundations that helped to define Siege as an incredibly detailed first-person shooter, and by scaling back to focus on a co-operative experience, Extraction has done well to retain the look and, more importantly, the feel of its competitive counterpart while carving out its own niche.”

The game is available on Xbox Game Pass so it’s a great way to try before you buy (£47.99, Game.co.uk). Read our review in full to find out more about Rainbow Six Extraction.

Differences between the Xbox series X and series S

Tuesday 15 February 2022 10:49 , Jasper Pickering

The Xbox series X and Xbox series S both run the same next-generation games (as well as older Xbox games through backwards compatibility), but the cheaper Xbox series S has less processing power under the bonnet. This means graphics won’t look as detailed and performance may be a little slower.

For that reason, the Xbox series X is considered to be the “true” next-generation console here – but both consoles are excellent games machines. The Xbox series S has another big advantage in that it’s much easier to find in stock than the Xbox series X.

The Xbox series S costs £249 (Amazon.co.uk), which looks positively bargainous compared to the Xbox series X at £449.

How to buy an Xbox series X online

Tuesday 15 February 2022 10:23 , Jasper Pickering

It’s all quiet on the Xbox front this morning, so let’s go over some things you can do right now to be ready when the next restock happens.

  • Register an account at each of the retailers that stock the Xbox series X. They’re listed in the main article above.

  • Ensure your correct payment details are saved in your browser on desktop, or on Google Pay or Apple Pay on your phone.

  • Are you a BT customer, or know somebody who is? Register your interest on the BT site to get exclusive access to BT’s next drop.

  • Sign up for a 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, in case the retailer makes its next Xbox drop a Prime-exclusive.

  • Download each retailer’s app (if they have one) and add the Xbox series X to your wish list or “save for later” list.

  • When the console drops, use the link in your wish list to add the Xbox to your trolley or basket – this usually has a higher success rate than navigating through the website.

  • Keep note of the prices of bundles to ensure you’re getting a good deal. Rounding up, the console itself is £450, controllers are £50, the official headset is £90, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs £11 per month. Newly released game are £60, but retailers usually bundle older games with the console.

  • The pay-as-you-go Xbox All Access programme is good value for money, so long as you don’t already have a Game Pass subscription.

Don’t buy a console on social media, these are always scams.

You can play Xbox games on your laptop

Tuesday 15 February 2022 09:53 , Jasper Pickering

You don’t actually need an Xbox series X to play Xbox series X games, just a fast enough internet connection and a compatible streaming device.

Xbox Cloud Gaming streams games from Microsoft’s servers to your console, laptop or phone, via your internet browser or the Xbox app. How does cloud gaming work? Well it’s basically like being on a Zoom call with a game that you’re controlling, meaning you can jump into new games at the push of a button rather than waiting around for an installation.

Cloud gaming requires a membership to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (£32.99, Argos.co.uk), which unlocks on-demand access to more than 100 games. Thankfully, decent laptops are much easier to find than the Xbox series X. If you’re thinking of upgrading, check out our list of the best laptops in 2022.

Xbox All Access available at Smyths Toys

Tuesday 15 February 2022 09:29 , Jasper Pickering

Smyths Toys has Xbox All Access available this morning. The retailer also restocked the Xbox series X itself last week, with consoles appearing in store up and down and across the United Kingdom.

Since then it’s focused on stocking Xbox All Access, the pay monthly scheme that allows you to spread the cost of the console over two years.

This is a 0 percent finance scheme – Klarna gives you an interest-free loan and the Xbox series X belongs to you on day one – and if you’re able to afford it, the entire balance can be paid off immediately without any penalties.

If you were planning on subscribing to the excellent Game Pass Ultimate service anyway, Xbox All Access is the way to go.

New ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ livestream teases next-gen announcement

Tuesday 15 February 2022 09:04 , Jasper Pickering

CD Projekt RED, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher III, have teased a new livestream on their Twitter account at 3PM UK time today.

Not much has been revealed about the details of the livestream, but as optimised versions of Cyberpunk for the PS5 and Xbox series X/S have been scheduled to release Q1 2022, it’s quite likely that we’ll finally have some news on the updated version of the game.

Cyberpunk 2077’s launch in late 2020 was... not great. The game was in such a troubled condition at launch that Playstation had to remove the game from their online store. We’re hoping that an updated version can fix the many, many bugs that were initially reported but we’ll find out more details later this afternoon.

How do you find an Xbox series X in store?

Monday 14 February 2022 16:21 , Steve Hogarty

We track every online retailer at once to catch the Xbox series X the moment it appears on sale.

Keeping track of available Xbox stock in physical shops is trickier, but it can be done. We rely on tips from shoppers and reports from social media to pinpoint the next-generation console popping up out there in the real world.

Here are some tips for finding the Xbox series X in stock in stores:

  • Argos, AO and Smyths Toys are often rumoured to have the Xbox available in stores. To a lesser extent we’ve heard of John Lewis & Partners, Currys and Game restocking their shelves.

  • Plug your post code into the retailer’s online product page to check for local stock. If you can, scroll around to peek at other stores farther away from you.

  • Xbox not in stock? Don’t lose hope. Many stores don’t log returns or uncollected Xbox pre-orders back into their stock systems. Pop into your local shop in person and ask a member of staff.

Can the Xbox series X storage be expanded?

Monday 14 February 2022 15:24 , Steve Hogarty

Games are massive now. Not just in popularity but in file size as well. A 1TB SSD hard drive might sound like a lot of space but that can quickly fill up if you intend on playing large games such as Call of Duty: Vanguard and Apex Legends.

Luckily, the series X comes with expandable storage if you’re not in the habit of uninstalling older games. The Seagate storage expansion card that can add an additional 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage to your console.

This 1TB model is available for £199.99 (Argos.co.uk) and is compatible with the Xbox series X and S.

The best VPN for the Xbox series X

Monday 14 February 2022 13:29 , Steve Hogarty

The Xbox series X has impeccable built-in security when playing games online, but there reasons besides security to install a VPN for the Xbox.

If you use your Xbox as your main entertainment hub, a virtual private network allows you to spoof your location and access telly shows and movies not normally available in your country, such as those found on American Netflix, which is full of amazing things they don’t want British people seeing. You can’t install a VPN directly to an Xbox series X, but you can install one on your internet router to anonymise all of the web traffic in your home in one fell swoop.

A slow VPN will hinder your online gaming, so to keep your Xbox series X running at peak performance you’ll want to make sure the VPN you choose is fast and responsive enough to avoid lag and dropouts when playing online. Check out our round-up of the best VPNs for torrenting, streaming and gaming.

Read our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED

Monday 14 February 2022 10:58 , Steve Hogarty

If handheld gaming is more your thing then check out our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED (£309.99, Argos.co.uk). The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.

Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again...this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

What’s happening with Amazon’s Xbox series X stock?

Monday 14 February 2022 10:06 , Steve Hogarty

Amazon has been missing the Xbox series X since early December. Just before Christmas the global retailer treated us to a giant restock – the biggest and longest-lasting we’ve seen at Amazon since launch – which suggests that the well might have run dry again for the time being.
